Islamic Windows as a Prism into MIT’s Past, Present, and FutureFebruary 26, 2025 - July 17, 2025Hidden within MIT’s Distinctive Collections, many architectural elements from the earliest days of the Institute’s architecture program still survive as part of the Rotch Art Collection. Among the artworks that conservators salvaged was a set of striking windows of gypsum and stained-glass, dating to the late 18th- to 19th c. Ottoman Empire. This exhibition illuminates the life of these historic windows, tracing their refracted histories from Egypt to MIT, their ongoing conservation, and the cutting-edge research they still prompt. The Maihaugen Gallery (14N-130) is open Monday through Thursday, 10am - 4pm, excluding Institute holidays.

- Apr 812:00 PMCampus Climate Action Speaker Series Micro-Reactors: A Carbon-Free Future for Campus Energy? As MIT continues developing its campus decarbonization plan, microreactors are emerging as potential solutions for providing reliable, carbon-free district energy. But how viable are they for MIT’s campus? What are the technical, economic, and regulatory challenges? This webinar is part of our ongoing series designed to engage the MIT community in exploring key solutions for decarbonization. In this session, Jacopo Buongiorno, MIT Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering and Director of the Center for Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems (CANES) and the MIT Nuclear Reactor Laboratory, will demystify SMR technology and discuss its potential integration with district energy systems. Buongiorno will also explore key considerations in evaluating SMRs as part of MIT’s energy transition.
- Apr 812:00 PMCog Lunch: Alicia ChenZoom link: https://mit.zoom.us/j/92182352856Speaker: Alicia ChenAffiliation: SaxeLabTitle: Signaling social identity in referential communicationAbstract: The words we use don’t just convey information about the world, they also convey information about who we are as speakers, marking our social identity. Yet formal models of referential communication have focused on the trade-off between informativity and efficiency, rather than how these considerations might also compete with a goal to signal social affiliation. In this project, we investigate how speakers intentionally signal in-group membership through their choice of referential expressions. Across three experiments, we measure the systematic interaction between audience (who we are talking to) and goal (what we want to accomplish in the social interaction). We find that the observed behavior is best explained by a model where speakers consider not only whether listeners will understand their message, but also whether their choice of words will mark them as an in-group member.
