Talk Title: Barcoding of episodic memories in the hippocampus of a food-caching birdTalk Abstract:Episodic memory is an extraordinary component of cognition which binds together a constellation of features co-occuring in a single experience. This memory can later be recalled and used flexibly to guide behavior. I study this ability using chickadees – birds which cache food at scattered locations and use hippocampal-dependent memory to find their caches later in time. My work identifies a code in hippocampal activity which appears transiently during memory formation, uniquely encodes the identity of individual memorable events, and is reactivated during memory recall. This neural 'barcode' may serve as a unique identifier for each memorable event to assist rapid formation of many non-interfering memories.This talk will not be live streamed

February 26, 2025 - July 17, 2025Hidden within MIT’s Distinctive Collections, many architectural elements from the earliest days of the Institute’s architecture program still survive as part of the Rotch Art Collection. Among the artworks that conservators salvaged was a set of striking windows of gypsum and stained-glass, dating to the late 18th- to 19th c. Ottoman Empire. This exhibition illuminates the life of these historic windows, tracing their refracted histories from Egypt to MIT, their ongoing conservation, and the cutting-edge research they still prompt.The Maihaugen Gallery (14N-130) is open Monday through Thursday, 10am - 4pm, excluding Institute holidays.

The Aerospace Innovation Seminar Series will feature speakers from some of the biggest names in entrepreneurial aerospace — many of whom started as students in AeroAstro!Mike Klinker is the co-founder and CTO at REGENT. He leads the company’s efforts in revolutionizing maritime mobility through the development of the seaglider, the first hydrofoiling wing-in-ground effect craft. Leveraging his expertise in control software development and flight testing, Mike oversaw REGENT's successful demonstration of the first foil-to-wing transition in 2022. Prior to REGENT, Mike held roles at Raptor Labs, MIT Lincoln Labs, and Aurora Flight Sciences, where he designed and operated cutting-edge autonomous and piloted vehicles. Mike holds a B.S. and M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from MIT, specializing in flight controls systems and complex systems integrations.
