Nemorino, drunk on hope and an excess of vino, stumbles around content, unconcerned, and convinced Adina will fall for him within a few days. Suddenly neglected, Adina finds herself unexpectedly troubled, prompting her to vie to get Nemorino’s attention back by entertaining the advances of a handsome but noxious soldier, Belcore.
